Adedotun’s continued excesses: Frees speech can’t be a shield for irresponsible conduct

Democracy thrives on the liberty of citizens to express their opinions, challenge authorities, and demand accountability from those entrusted with public responsibility. Freedom of speech remains one of the strongest pillars of any democratic society, and every citizen has the constitutional right to question, criticize, and participate in public discourse.
However, freedom of expression is not an unrestricted licence for recklessness, abuse, or the deliberate erosion of civility in public conversation. The right to speak must always be accompanied by responsibility, restraint, and respect for the institutions and individuals that sustain democracy.
It is against this background that the continued excesses of Adetoun, often defended under the convenient excuse of free speech, must be condemned in the strongest terms. While criticism remains a legitimate democratic tool, persistent resort to inflammatory rhetoric, personal attacks, and sensationalism represents a dangerous departure from the values of responsible advocacy.
A democracy cannot survive where every boundary of decency is crossed in the name of activism. Genuine advocacy is not measured by the volume of anger expressed or the harshness of words used; it is measured by the strength of facts presented, the quality of ideas advanced, and the sincerity of the solutions offered.
There is a clear distinction between holding leaders accountable and engaging in a campaign of hostility. Those who genuinely desire progress understand that criticism should illuminate issues, not create unnecessary tension; it should challenge policies, not attack personalities; and it should contribute to public enlightenment, not promote division.
The repeated attempt to hide unacceptable conduct under the banner of free speech weakens the very democratic principles such individuals claim to defend. Freedom of expression was never designed to protect reckless statements, character assassination, or the lowering of public discourse to the level of personal confrontation.
The Office of the Governor of Ogun State is not a personal possession of any individual; it is an institution created by the constitution and entrusted to serve the people. Criticism of Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun is legitimate and expected in a democracy. However, undermining the dignity of that office through irresponsible utterances does not strengthen democracy; it diminishes it.
Governor Dapo Abiodun has consistently demonstrated tolerance for diverse opinions and understands that leadership comes with scrutiny. His administration remains open to constructive engagement, objective evaluation, and legitimate criticism. But accountability must not become a disguise for hostility, and activism must not become an excuse for misconduct.
Under Governor Abiodun’s leadership, Ogun State has continued to record interventions in infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, investment attraction, youth empowerment, and economic development. These achievements can be debated, analysed, and challenged through facts and alternative proposals. That is the essence of democratic engagement.
Unfortunately, contemporary public discourse is increasingly threatened by a culture where provocation is mistaken for courage, insults are mistaken for activism, and controversy is mistaken for relevance. Society must reject this dangerous trend before it destroys the quality of conversations required for meaningful development.
Adetoun has the right, like every Nigerian citizen, to express her opinions. That right must be protected. But the same democratic society that guarantees freedom of speech also demands accountability in how that freedom is exercised.
Free speech is a right, but responsibility is its companion. No individual should be allowed to repeatedly cross the limits of decency and then seek refuge under the protection of democracy.
Nigeria and, indeed, Ogun State deserves a higher standard of public engagement. Leaders may be questioned, policies may be criticised, and governments may be challenged, but such engagements must be guided by truth, respect, and a commitment to the common good.
The administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun remains focused on governance, development, and delivering on its mandate to the people of Ogun State. It will not be distracted by attempts to replace meaningful debate with unnecessary controversies.
History does not honour those who create the loudest disturbances; it remembers those who contribute ideas that advance society. Advocacy must therefore regain its dignity, because when reckless rhetoric replaces responsible dialogue, democracy itself becomes the casualty.
