BudgIT officer attacked in Katsina, firm fumes, condemns action

STEPHEN GBADAMOSI, IBADAN

A non-governmental organization that tracks financial expenditure in Nigeria, BufgIT, has lamented alleged attack on one of its staff, Mustapha Sadiq, in Katsina State.

The organization, in a statement by its Head of Communications, Misturah Owolabi-Adeyemi, on Friday, said it was a brutal attack.

“BudgIT has strongly condemned the brutal attack on its Katsina State officer, Mustapha Sadiq, who was assaulted in his home by armed assailants on April 4, 2026.

“According to initial reports, five men wielding machetes broke into his residence at night and inflicted severe injuries to his head and upper body. He is currently receiving medical attention.

“While it is not yet confirmed whether the attack is connected to his professional and civic responsibilities, the organisation has raised serious concerns about safety, security, and the growing risks within communities, particularly for individuals engaged in accountability work.

“BudgIT has formally reported the incident to the Nigerian Police and is calling for a prompt, thorough, and transparent investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice. The organisation is also urging security agencies to determine whether the attack is linked to his work in tracking public projects and promoting accountability.

“BudgIT further calls on relevant authorities to take decisive steps to improve citizen safety and respond swiftly to violent crimes, noting that incidents of this nature undermine public confidence,” it said.
